 Welding and its Type

Welding : It is defined as joining of two metal (same or different) with or without pressure , with or without the use of filler material and with or without the use of heat.

Types of welding:
  • Pressure Welding: In this type of welding metal is  upto welding temperature(below melting point) then pressure is applied on it to join the metal
Example : Forge Welding , Resistance Arc Welding
  • Fusion Welding : In this metal is heated upto its melting temperature and union is produced on subsequent solidification.
Example : Gas Welding , Arc Welding , Thermit Welding

Advantage of Welding:
  • Low manufacturing cost
  • Strong joints are formed as compare to bolt and rivet joint
  • Can repair broken and defective metals. Because of that it prevents us from re buying the things
  • Save material while making joint
  • Reduce Labour cost
  • Without welding you can't imagine a single plane or rocket welding is necessity in this modern times.
  • No unwanted noise produce while making joint like riveting process

Disadvantage of Welding:
  • Skilled person is required to do welding
  • Some welding are expensive but necessity so they increase cost (example plasma arc welding, electron beam welding etc)
  • Defects arise during welding process are difficult to detect (example air pocket , slag inclusion)
  • Low fatigue strenght due to brittle nature of the welding
