Reciprocating Ball Type Steering Mechanism

Reciprocating Ball Type Steering Mechanism

This is a special type of steering mechanism in this the steering rod has worm . The worm portion contains balls and a nut is mounted on the worm which balls travel in the groove. The purpose of ball here is to reduce the friction during the movement of the nut.

When the steering rod rotates the ball in the worm move the nut the forward and backward direction along the rod length. The magnitude of  direction travel by the nut depends on the pitch of the worm. The nut is further is connected to the lever which control the tyre rotation.

Advantage  of Reciprocating Ball type Steering Mechanism:
  • Less friction due to balls
  • Less noise produce due to low friciton
  • Greater Tractive effort is required at any speed
  • Cheaper to convert to rack and pinion mechanism
Disadvantage of Reciprocating Ball type Steering Mechanism:
  • Need maintenance after some year od service.
  • Can't adjust the amount of force in steering.
  • At high speed this mechanism will produce lots of problem and does not work properly
