Metal Hot working

 Metal Hot working

In this blog, we will learn what is metal hot working, Advantage, disadvantage of it  and its applications

Definition of Metal Hot-working:

It is defined as a process in which the plastic deformation takes place in metal and alloys when they are heated above the recrystallization temperature (0.8 to .9 times of melting point temperature) . During this process recrystallization and deformation takes place simultaneously.

Advantage of Hot-working:

  • The fine-grain structure is obtained after the hot working process.
  • Low force is required for deformation as we know the strength of metal is low at high temperature.
  • Annealing and stress relieving are not required.
  • We can control the grain size upto certain extent which makes the metal tougher after hot working process.
  • Big jobs can be deformed to make desirable product in hot working.
  • During hot working prcoess long fibre with orientation like structures is formed which makes metal strong

Disadvantage of Hot-working process:
  • In hot working process poor surface finish is obtained
  • Dimensional accuracy is poor
  • Due to Oxidation and scaling unwanted metal loss occur.
  • Need Expensive machine to work because of high temperature . It increase the automation and production cost.
  • Energy cost is high because we need a high temperature to do hot working process
  • During Hot working process surface reactions occur between the metal surface and furnace atmosphere these kind of defect mostly arise in reactive metals like titanium
