Classification of Refrigerants

 Classification of Refrigerants

Refrigerants are classified into two types
  1. Primary Refrigerant: These are those refrigerants that take directly part in the refrigeration System.
  2. Secondary Refrigerant: These are those refrigerants that are first cooled by primary refrigerant and then they are further used for cooling.

Let's see the classification of different groups of Primary Refrigerants:
  • Azetropes: Azetropes group contains a mixture of different refrigerants which do not separate into individual components with the change in pressure and temperature or both.Azetropes have fixed thermodynamics properties
    Example: Refrigerant 500 which contain 73.8% F-12 and 26.2% F-152
  • Halocarbon: These are those refrigerants that contain one or more halogens like Chlorine , bromine and flurine. These kind of refrigerant are commonly used in household and industrial purpose
    Example :
    CCl3F (Trichloromonifluoro-methane), CClF2(DichlorodoFluoro-methane)
  • Hydro-Carbons : Many organic compound like ethane ,propane, methane, etc are considered as refrigerant of hydro-carbon group. They are non toxic , no ozone depletion properties and minimal effect on global warming.
  • Inorganic Compounds: Inorganic compounds refrigerant are those refrigerant which does not contain carbon hydrogen bonds. Majority of the refrigerant under this group are non toxix, eco -friendly and inexpensive
    Example :
    NH3 , H2O , CO2
  • Unsaturated Organic Compound : These refrigerant mostly contain hydro carbon
    Example : Ethylene,Propylene
