SLIDING MESH TYPE OF GEARBOX

 SLIDING MESH TYPE OF GEARBOX

This is a very simple design of a gearbox. In the figure, you can see that  input shaft that basically connects to the clutch shaft .The output shaft and  the layshaft(countershaft). In this type of gearbox, the power comes from the engine to the clutch shaft after that it transfers to the countershaft (layshaft ) which are always in mesh.

The main shaft contains gear that can slide on the main shaft (this is where its name comes as a sliding mesh type gearbox). When you move the gear on the main shaft you will receive a different kind of speed ratio

Advantages

  • easy to make
  • cheap price
  • sudden shock due to gear changing
Disadvantage
  • very noisy
  • short life during gear engaging in slide mesh gearbox they badly affect gear teeth
  • not suitable for the product for long life
Why we need a gearbox? why can't we directly connect the gearbox to the main shaft? what's the point connecting it to the layshaft

the reason we need a gearbox
  • suppose we connect the main shaft to the clutch shaft first the moment you start the engine it will start rotating the wheel at top speed (we can't control the speed of the engine accurately) that is the reason we use a gearbox. as we all know when the gear is in position 1 the car will run at the lowest speed this is what we want so that we can control similarly we can increase and decrease the speed of the car by moving gear/sliding gear on the main shaft
